As soon as i run iTunes on my customers laptop with 4 GB ram and a dual core processor the system slows almost to a halt. I’ve looked at everything. I’ve uninstalled iTunes and re-installed it three or four times, tried updating the system with Sony updates and windows updates and all the other things that i could think of. Nope still hogs the processor. I tried a 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine, nope. No malware or viruses on the system. Nothing i did worked until i found this page…….

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3259052?start=0&tstart=0

This is another customer request…..

Change your default printer

If more than one printer is connected to your computer, you can choose one to use by default. Choose the printer you will use most often. That way, when you print using Windows or your programs, you won’t have to select a printer each time. You can change the default printer at any time and you can still select other printers for occasional print jobs.

In Windows XP

click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

Right-click the icon for the printer you want to use as the default printer, and then click Set As Default Printer on the shortcut menu.

Vista

Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Printers.

Right-click the printer you want to use, and then click Set as Default Printer. A check mark is displayed on the printer icon to mark it as your default printer.

Windows 7

Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

Right-click the printer you want to use, and then click Set as default printer. (You’ll see a check mark on the printer’s icon signifying that it’s now your default printer.)

I got this today from one of my contacts on Google + They work at Google and posted the following information….

Please read it and do it today just to be sure.

If you see the symptoms get in touch and we will look at how we can help you clean your PC.

Matt Cutt’s is head of spam at Google this is what he writes…

This is important: Google has been able to detect a large number of computers infected with a specific piece of malware. If you go to Google and do a search (any word will do) right now, check to see whether you get a “Your computer appears to be infected” warning at the top of the search results. If you see the message, you need to clean up the infection from your machine.

We’re trying this as an experiment to alert and protect consumers that we believe have infected machines. Please share this widely.

Added: This is malware that’s specific to Windows. Remember to do an actual search (any search will do) and check the top of the search results page; don’t just go to the home page.

Here is the official notice of this on The Official Google Blog…..

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/using-data-to-protect-people-from.html

I’ve had three calls this week about just this item so I’m putting this on my website again so that you can share this with your friends, your parents and your parents friends.

There’s a scam goin’ on that implicates Microsoft being run from Indian call centres.

The scam starts with a call which goes through the usual security checks before saying “I’m calling for Microsoft. We’ve had a report from your internet service provider of serious virus problems from your computer.”

Naturally, they then tell you that your computer is going to die or sprout legs and kick you to death or something should the problem go unsolved.

If they’ve succeed in convincing you to keep talking, you’ll be directed to your computer and asked to open a program called “Windows Event Viewer”. To the average user, it looks like a troubling and long list of errors, some labelled “critical”.

“Yes, that’s it,” says the caller. “Now let me guide you through the steps to fixing it.”

You’re then sent to a website and told to download a program that hands over remote control of your computer and the caller “installs” various “fixes” for the problem. Then you need to cough-up £185.

Of course, there’s was never anything wrong with your computer (well, unless you count that weird porn you’ve been looking at) and naturally, the caller does not work for Microsoft. Microsoft aren’t in the habit of ringing people up are they? Sadly, anyone falling for this will have handed over every bit of data from their computer.

This scam has been going since 2008 and grew hugely this year. It is being run from call centres based in Kolkata, by teams believed to have access to sales databases from computer and software companies who seem to be using the phonebook to get names to call.

When contacted about the scams, Microsoft said it was “currently investigating a series of instances in which the business practices of an organisation within the Microsoft Partner Network [that] have given rise to significant concerns from a number of sources. We take matters such as these extremely seriously and will take any action that is appropriate once our investigation is complete.”

The company has noticed the problem. “Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer,” it says on its website. “If you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft Tech Support, hang up. We do not make these kinds of calls.”
